Tiles: St John's

This track is all about one of Gloucester’s historical figures – Jemmy Wood, owner of Gloucester Old Bank in the 18th Century. He was known as the Gloucester Miser and may have inspired the character of Scrooge. I enjoyed walking round St. John's church and took photos of many interesting little details as I listened to the musicians warm up and prepare for the recording of Coals. However, the character and folklore surrounding Jemmy Wood is so strong that this was the only tile I produced for this session, with just a couple of colour and shading variations. My drawing is based on an 18th century print and is probably the simplest of all my designs. I used charcoal and then smudged it, thinking of Jemmy fading into history...
